Damien Lovegrove is one of the most popular European portrait photographers. In December 2019, I invited Damien for the second time to Belgium for an evening talk and live demo, aptly called ‘An Evening With Damien Lovegrove’. The event sold out completely and those who were there were super enthusiastic about the show. That’s why we’re extremely happy to present the video recording of this unique event.

What will you learn from ‘An Evening with Damien Lovegrove’?

‘An Evening With Damien Lovegrove’ has a running time of well over two hours and can be broken down into three main chapters. In the first part, Damien walks you through some of his recent images. This isn’t an ego-trip, yet a highly educational discovery journey in which Damien explains how he creates his images. Lighting, the choice for flash or continuous light sources, interacting with models, posing, styling, color palette, … Damien touches on all of these subjects and more!

In part 2, you get to follow along during a live shoot. We simulated a practical case study as they often happen: famous musician with annoying manager gives photographer half an hour to make all the images for the musician’s new CD and tour. Watch how Damien, using only limited means and minutes, achieves maximum result.

Finally, in part 3, Damien offers an insight in his editing process. He’s a big supporter of ‘less is more’ during image editing. Amongst others, Damien shows you how he converts his images to Black & White and how he uses Lightroom to tweak and finalise a look that he predominantly already sets in-camera. Damien hardly ever uses Photoshop, except during ‘An Evening with Damien Lovegrove’, in which he uses the app to create a tour poster for our musician.

In this tutorial, you’ll see how you can achieve great results with only a minimum of time and means. The images above were made with one to three Godox AD200 flashes. These flashes cost less than most hotshoe flashes from the big name camera brands.
