INSPIRATIONAL ONLINE EVENT: LOVEGROVE PORTRAITS DECONSTRUCTED I & II

In May 2020, I hosted a two-part live online evening talk with internationally renowned portrait photographer Damien Lovegrove. The event was such a success, that we not only decided to do a sequel (more about that here) on January 26 and 28, but that we also decided to offer the recording of the first event as a downloadable purchase. Lovegrove Portraits Deconstructed I & II totals approximately 4 hours of photographic inspiration, with loads of tips and ideas that you can incorporate into your own photography.

Your guide: Damien Lovegrove

Damien Lovegrove is one of the most famous European portrait photographers and a source of inspiration to amateur and professional photographers alike. His energy shines through in his work. After two highly successful live events in Belgium, I’m super excited to announce the availability of the recording of the two-part live lecture that Damien held last year.

In each of these two sessions, Damien carefully deconstructs a number of his best portraits. He’ll explain his reasoning behind a particular pose, why he used a specific light, or where he drew his inspiration for a particular framing. Damien’s black & white work is very different from his colour portfolio, yet they have one thing in common: they both look stunning. That’s why we’ve decided to dedicate one session to each genre. In Lovegrove Portraits Deconstructed I, Damien will walk you through some of his best black & white work while in Lovegrove Portraits Deconstructed II, he will discuss his use of colour.

What will you learn from ‘Lovegrove Portraits Deconstructed I & II’?

Lovegrove Portraits Deconstructed is less about gear and f-stops, but all the more about offering you ideas and inspiration on how to create portraits that stand the test of time, regardless of camera brand or megapixel count. In these two highly entertaining and informative sessions, Damien will discuss each photograph in turn: the way it was lit, the composition, narrative and the often crazy stories behind the pictures. Expect to be entertained, informed, educated and inspired all at once by a modern day master of photography.

Damien turned digital in 2001 and has never shot roll of film since. Those first ten years of digital shooting are featured in these events. At the time Damien was running a very successful wedding and portrait photography business. His hobby was photography too and he soon developed his passion for photographing people his way into a sideline to that wedding business.

Part 1: Lovegrove Black & White Portraits Deconstructed

Photography began with blaci & white, so we felt it was only logical to make the first session all about Damien’s interpretation of that classic style. Below is a selection of some of the images Damien’s deconstructing in the first part. As you can see, there’s a good variety of styles and subjects, couples and individuals, men and women. So regardless of what you normally shoot, you’re bound to be inspired with new ideas and techniques.

Part 2: Lovegrove Colour Portraits Deconstructed

The second session is all about colour. Bold or subdued. Striking or minimalist. Here are but a couple of the images that Damien is going to photographically dismantle in the recording of the second session.
